Quite possibly my favorite part of doing a Whole30 is the mandatory encouraged consumption of avocados. Smashed up into guacamole, chopped up in a salad or scooped right from the shell, I’ll take them any way I can get them. Lately my go to breakfast has become scrambled or soft-boiled eggs, a piece of fruit and depending on what kind of day it is, a quarter or half sliced avocado. There have been days where avocado has appeared in all three meals–sliced for breakfast, guacamole on carnitas for lunch and diced in a salsa for dinner. Excessive, maybe, but I don’t ever regret it.

5 Super Bowl Recipe Fixes
I’m pretty proud of the fact that I can count the number of super bowls I’ve watched on one hand. I hate football with a passion. During high school I was part of my school’s color guard. We were pretty good. Ramsey High School was much better known for Big Blue, its band and guard, than it was for any of its sports team. We competed on weekends all over the northeast, but Saturday mornings were our dress rehearsals, halftime at the high school football games. For four years I was forced to watch football. As soon as I could escape I did.
2nd Blogoversary—Celebrate with Something Sweet
Another year and lots of food. The past year of blogging has been very different from the year before, mostly in quantity. As most of you have probably noticed, frequency has tapered off a bit. For a while I was doing a lot of writing that was not here on Brooklyn Locavore. Some for Restaurant Girl and a bit of editing and writing for Just Food. Then I started a new full-time position in December. Work life has been crazy, good crazy, but forced me to scale back a little. I’ve continued with Just Food, took a break from Restaurant Girl but ideally would love to be posting here twice a week. I still cook almost as much and am at the point that I probably have more recipes and ideas to share than I’ll ever be able to write.
Party Dish: Kalamata Hummus
Sometimes I go to Whole Foods just for the samples. Admit it. You do the same thing. Or at the very least there’s a silent “YES! when you find samples just waiting to be tasted. Usually I’m happy enough with a few cubes of cheese but when there’s an actual product to try–even better. A few weeks ago, a lovely woman was standing by with a basket of pita chips and variety of hummuses to try. From spicy to feta to garlic roasted, they all looked fantastic. But what stopped me dead in my tracks was the kalamata olive hummus. I’ve eaten plenty of olive tapanade in my day, but addition of chickpeas and tahini intrigued me. I sampled, celebrated and brought some home to share with my husband. It was gone in hours.
